Theo Ellsworth is coming to Kansas…sort of…

I am really thrilled that I was able to snag a couple of pieces by Theo Ellsworth from his gallery showing at the  Giant Robot gallery in LA. How great it was that they made purchases available at their website since I live far away in Kansas and could not attend the show in person. I have been a fan of Theo’s for a while now, so this was a great opportunity to score some of his original work. I won’t get the pieces until the show is finished and it is hard waiting to see them in person, but the show ends next week and hopefully they will wing their way to me shortly thereafter. Here are photos of them though, to keep me company while I wait. Aren’t they cool?!

I decided to join a swap at iATCs again. Just for the heck of it. It has been a while. The swap theme is to take a template that is in the shape of a fish and do something arty to it. Naturally, I had to go the direction of making non-fish fish. I have a couple more to make, but this is what I've done so far. I have to say that I've had some fun.

It has been a while since I posted anything and it has been a while since I did any artwork. This is just something I had sketched out a long time ago and finally got around to finishing up. I'm not all that excited by it, but it felt good just to play around with my pencils and pens and markers. This piece is roughly 5 by 6 inches in size.

It has been a while since I posted any photos of one of my walks with Asha. She turned 11 last month. I am so glad she is still with me. She will be having surgery in a few weeks time to remove a large lump on her thigh. There will be no walks for a week afterwards, about which I am pretty sure she will be unhappy. We’ll try to get plenty in before then.

I took today off to run some errands. I relaxed during the afternoon and played a little in the studio. This is what happened. Sometimes it is fun to play with collage.

"Potted Plants"

This is a slightly larger piece, about 8 by 10 inches and it was done in water-based markers, colored pencils and ink on Bristol paper. I was rather excited about it when I first sketched it out, but I ended up being less thrilled with my color palette. It took a long while to finish it and now I am not sure how I feel about it.

Let’s think about this…

Wired
Wired

I sometimes suspect that my brain is hard wired to think a certain way and I wonder what it would be like to be inside someone else’s head. Then again, as strange as mine may seem at times, it is home to me.

Blossom

Months ago I had a chat with a friend who talked about facing a new phase in her life and the sense of possibility she felt. I sketched this piece soon afterwards and it has been sitting in my "needs to be finished" stack ever since. I finally fished it out yesterday afternoon and finished it. The scan is slightly off with respect to the colors, but not much.

Solitary Solidarity

There has been another downpour of rain here, so I whiled away the morning finishing up this piece that I started yesterday. I was almost done with it and then I overworked the white on the thigh and damaged the paper a little. After so many hours of work, I was really aggravated. You cannot really tell unless you look at it closely, but of course, that is all I will think about when I look at it. On top of that, the expression on the face turned out sort of funky looking, but it has been worked enough as it is. Oh well, "bah humbug" is all I’ve got to say.

I have not posted in a while, nor have I spent much time in the studio of late. But, I finally spent a few hours there this morning with this result. I guess it is reflective of how few words I’ve had to say for myself. It felt good to finally “speak.”

“Unfurled”

I finally made it back into the studio between breaks in working on my taxes. I finished up this piece for a swap at iATCs. It is 4 by 6 nches and was done with water-based markers, colored pencils and ink on Bristol paper. I am so happy that the snow is finally gone. Maybe Spring will find its way to me soon.

Tasmanian Tiger

This is a 4 by 6 inch drawing done in colored pencils, water-based markers and ink on Bristol paper. It depicts a Tasmanian Tiger, or Thylacine, an extinct animal, and was done for a swap I am in at iATCs. It is an interesting looking creature. Here is an excerpt on it form Wikipedia:

"The thylacine had become extremely rare or extinct on the Australian mainland before European settlement of the continent, but it survived on the island state of Tasmania along with several other endemic species, including the Tasmanian devil. Intensive hunting encouraged by bounties is generally blamed for its extinction, but other contributory factors may have been disease, the introduction of dogs, and human encroachment into its habitat. Despite its official classification as extinct, sightings are still reported, though none proven."

Although I tend not to be into hearts or to do much artwork that is overtly erotic, I decided to join a swap at iATCs where we had to create heart-shaped cards and then do something with them using  certain color schemes. I cut out my shapes from watercolor paper, and then just slathered the cards with watercolor paint in my chosen color theme. Then, I sat back and tried to see what forms suggested themselves to me in the arrangement of the paint. For some reason, perhaps it was the colors, I started seeing body shapes. One thing led to another and here we are. I guess it is sort of appropriate for Valentines Day. So, i guess if you have a honey, give him or her a big smooch. Oh, and each of these hearts is 4 by 2 inches in size.

"Blind Flight"

This is a larger piece (8" x 10") done in water-based markers, colored pencils and ink on Bristol paper.  I did my preliminary sketch a couple of weeks ago and finally got around to finishing it off.  I put my back out shoveling my car out of the snow last Friday, so working on artwork is one of the few tasks I seem to be able to manage.
